20 years of pain

Amina suffered for about 20 years with pain in her eyes. It started in her left eye and then her right too. The trachoma infections led to trichiasis and she says: "I had so much pain and many tears when coming out of the darkness."
We visited Amina at home a year after her surgery to see the impact of the operation. "My eyes were full of tears in the sunshine - it made my life very hard."
She admits that she pulled her eyelashes out frequently, and thought this was her only way of getting any relief from the pain. She heard about the availability of help with eye problems from an announcement made by the village leader. She was very nervous about seeking treatment - but hopeful about feeling better.
Now, back at home one year on, she says. "I'm so happy I had the treatment, and my family are so happy. I can be outside again, in the light - like it is today, and feel no pain. My life would have been so hard without the operation."
Just £5 could save one person's sight and stop the pain.
