Anglo American digs deep for Sightsavers
The UK-based global mining and natural resources company Anglo American plc has been supporting Sightsavers through the Anglo American Group Foundation.
The Anglo American Group Foundation's recent support has been centred in Mali and Tanzania, where its subsidiary Anglo Gold has operations. The Anglo American Group Foundation's work with Sightsavers has proved to be a great way for them to give something back to the countries in which their stakeholders live and work. This year the Anglo American Group Foundation is supporting a new programme in Senegal.
Senegal
Sightsavers began work in the Louga region of Senegal because of the high levels of eye disease and the acute shortage of human resources in the area. Sightsavers have received £50,000 towards eye care programmes in the region.
This funding is enabling comprehensive eye care to be provided, including cataract surgery. Since the beginning of 2007 around 50,000 people have been examined and over 500 surgical procedures have already taken place. Eight new surgeons have been recruited and inducted in their new roles and additional cataract surgical equipment is also in place. Progress made at the Comprehensive Eye Care Programme in Louga continues to be very positive.
Mali
In Mali, Sightsavers delivers services to nearly 1 million people across 1,719 villages in the Koulikoro and Sikasso regions. The Anglo American Group Foundation has supported the National Onchocerciasis Team, who treat large numbers of adults and children with the drug Mectizan® in order to prevent river blindness.
Tanzania
In Tanzania, the Anglo American Group Foundation has supported the training of paramedics, nurses and cataract surgeons at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre. This programme continues to enable students to enhance their practical skills while bringing eye care to rural areas. In 2006, thanks to this programme, 1,707 people have been given a brighter future following cataract surgery.
Guinea
In Guinea , Anglo American Group Foundation supports an eye health centre in Boké (the district capital). Anglo American Group Foundation supported the renovation and equipping of the eye care unit at Boké hospital. The Boké eye unit now provides a number of services to the surrounding region including the recruiting and training of eye health staff, cataract and trichiasis eye camps, as well as providing trachoma and onchocerciasis prevention and treatment. This unit will meet the eye care needs of 1,500,000 people in the areas of Boké, Gaoual, Koundara, Boffa and Fria.
