Who we are

80% of global blindness can be prevented or cured, and Sightsavers International has been working for 60 years to combat avoidable blindness in some of the world’s poorest countries, restoring sight through specialist treatment and eye care.

Loss of sight often leads to exclusion, making it difficult people who are blind to lead independent and fulfilled lives. We support people who are irreversibly blind or have low vision by providing education, counselling and training, as well as advocating for the rights of visually impaired people.

We work in partnership with local organisations in 33 developing countries, meaning our projects are appropriate for the different cultural settings where we operate. We also try and forge partnerships with government ministries, to make sure we work together with governments rather than in parallel with them.

In this way we have helped restore sight to more than five million people and treated over 70 million for potentially blinding conditions.
