Become a Sightsavers major donor

Making a large gift to Sightsavers can make a huge difference to the lives of blind and visually impaired people in some of the poorest parts of the world. Your support can transform entire communities – restoring sight, helping the fight against preventable blindness, and ensuring that those who are blind or have low vision can fully participate in society.

Sight restoration is an extremely effective way of tackling poverty head-on. In 2015, Sightsavers performed 252,044 cataract operations and provided over 141 million treatments to protect people from blinding diseases such as river blindness. We have ambitious plans for the future – and your support can help us achieve them.

Contact the Major Donor Team today and find out how we can work with you to help you achieve your philanthropy goals. Email us at or call us on: 01444 227430.

The difference your gift could make

£5,000 – could train an ophthalmologist to gain their initial professional qualification. By training ophthalmologists in-country, we ensure we’re creating a sustainable model whereby talent stays within the country, and there is a dedicated professional to deal with patients after their operation.

£15,000 – could allow 50 blind and low vision children to go to a school with specially trained staff, and to learn alongside their sighted peers. This includes training the teachers and ensuring pupils have all the relevant equipment they need to learn.

£30,000 – could deliver 1,000 adult cataract surgeries, including the cost of operating equipment, surgical instruments, staff costs and hospital maintenance.

£100,000 – could protect over 1,428,571 people from preventable blindness by distributing the drug Mectizan® to remote and isolated communities across Africa.

What our supporters say

“When people are asked which affliction they’d find most difficult to cope with, the answer is often blindness. Yet there’s a massive lack of funding and trained staff to deal with avoidable blindness in developing countries. Sightsavers can restore a person’s sight for just £30 – an incredibly small price to pay to change their life. There’s also the knock-on-effect of a treated person being able to work to provide for their own family.” Malcolm

“We regard giving people their sight as you do, an extraordinarily cost effective way of increasing human happiness”. Colin and Ruth

“We have been supporting Sightsavers for many years, and were originally drawn to their work by the simple fact that they can restore a person’s eyesight for a relatively small sum. Where else can such a small amount make such a difference to someone’s life? Our decision to visit their work in Bangladesh was well rewarded and has increased our determination to continue with our support. All in all a humbling experience!” Julia and Nick

“The level of detail I receive through reports from the field brings the whole project to life and makes me feel much closer to the work. It really appeals to me, this way of supporting a project as you can see the progression on a year by year basis. There’s something incredibly satisfying about knowing the exact number of cataract surgeries I have supported to deliver, knowing the actual amount of change you helped make – there’s nothing quite like it!” Michael and Suzy

Our commitment to you

Our work relies on the generous support of the public. Your support will have a huge impact: it could ensure blind children get the education they deserve, or could restore the sight of those who thought they would never see again. Your gift will help lift people out of the cycle of blindness and poverty.

In return for your support we can:

  • Provide guidance on our work and which areas will match your interests.
  • Ensure that you have a dedicated point of contact at Sightsavers to keep you updated about the impact your support is making.
  • Tailor our communication with you to meet your individual needs.
  • Offer the opportunity to visit one of our projects that you’re significantly supporting so you can see the difference your support is making.
  • Invite you to our events where you will have the opportunity to hear more about our work, meet senior leadership and staff who are leading key areas of our work.
  • Reassure you that your support is tremendously valued and we would not want to do anything to jeopardise it. We do not sell or share your data and promise we never will.

“We value the generosity of all our supporters and are proud to be able to work so closely with individuals who have chosen Sightsavers. The support of our major donors is vital to our work – by working together your philanthropy has the power to transform the lives of so many people”. Dr Caroline Harper CBE, Chief Executive

“I count the Lewis family amongst our closest partnerships – over the last ten years the family’s generosity has helped thousands of people in some of the world’s poorest countries – restoring sight, preventing blindness, and ensuring both children and adults with visual impairments get the opportunity to flourish.” Elizabeth Owuor-Oyugi, Country Director Kenya
