Living with blindness

Wechani, who lives in Ghana, lost his sight to river blindness 50 years ago. 30 years later his wife Awebidaja went blind too. Now they both rely totally on family and friends for support. Awabidaja worries about the future of her children and prays to God that they won’t suffer like her and her husband.

Mectizan® tablets costing just 5p to deliver - a tiny amount - can be the difference between someone keeping their sight or losing it forever to river blindness.

Sightsavers can help and support people whose blindness cannot be cured, like Wechani and Awebidaja, to lead more independent lives, through rehabilitation training and education. With 45 million blind people worldwide needing help, there is much to be done.
