Students studying effective altruism and health care at Harvard University have selected Sightsavers to receive a grant of US$25,000.

The students, from the secondary concentration in Global Health and Health Policy, took the class ‘Reimagining Health Care: Effective Altruism and Beyond’ at Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. They were taught by Professor Nir Eyal from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health.

As part of the class, the students explored what constitutes an ideal ethical health care system. An essential element of Sightsavers’ work is to help national governments build local eye health expertise, and our goal is to develop national eye health services so they can be run by the country itself.

Sightsavers is delighted to receive further recognition of the cost-effectiveness of our work in preventing avoidable blindness. The value for money of our work treating blinding and disabling neglected tropical diseases, in particular school-based deworming projects, has also been recognised by charity evaluator GiveWell.

We are grateful to students and staff at Harvard’s Global Health and Health Policy for their support.

Our gratitude also extends to the Philanthropy Lab, which donated the funds. Philanthropy Lab aims to spark students’ interest and participation in philanthropy by giving them the responsibility of directing real money to non-profit organisations.
