The skills to pay the bills
Imagine trying to get a job with no ICT (information and communication technology) skills – it would be pretty difficult. It would also be challenging staying in touch with your friends, and keeping up with what’s going on in the rest of the world. That’s why ICT plays such an important role in economic and social development, and it’s no different in Bangladesh.
Yet in Bangladesh, like many other developing countries, people with visual impairments are often left behind when it comes to ICT.
Sightsavers, with Dhaka University Central Library, is facilitating training in this field for 36 visually impaired students of Dhaka University. The training is being conducted by our partner organisation Power for Social Action (YPSA), in the resource centre at the library. This centre was funded by Sightsavers, and is fully equipped with computers and Braille printers.
The training will include how to use computer screen reading software, speech synthesizers, self-voicing software, as well as programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint using JAWS (Job Access with Synthesizer). Students will also learn about policy and legislation regarding disability and ICT.
