Grameenphone supports screening on World Sight Day
Telecommunications giant Grameenphone has once again shown its commitment to Bangladesh's eye health by organising a fantastic range of events to celebrate World Sight Day in October.
World Sight Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about issues surrounding eye care and blindness, and the company worked tirelessly this year to promote it. They took out adverts on radio, television and in print, and erected giant billboards around Dhaka City, the nation’s capital.
Grameenphone also organised eye screenings in five clothing factories and three schools. Factory officials were trained by Sightsavers’ partner Islamia Eye Hospital staff in how to recognise basic eye diseases. They were then able to screen over 20,000 factory workers. Of these 1,720 people with vision problems were identified. With the financial support of Grameenphone and the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturing and Export Association 388 people were provided with spectacles.
Similarly in the three schools 5,500 students were examined by teachers, and 550 referred on to medical staff for further assessment. Of them 319 were provided with spectacles, supported again by Grameenphone.
Grameenphone really helped make World Sight Day a huge success in Dhaka this year, and Sightsavers looks forward to working with them for years to come.
