Latest news from Bangladesh
The Government of Bangladesh is still working on its health policy, and Sightsavers has provided its feedback: which includes the importance of including eye care service delivery within the overall policy.
The price of daily consumable items is increasing day by day. Even the middle classes are starting to struggle.
High temperatures, continuous rainfall and the need to spend time harvesting have hampered outreach work.
Highlights from our projects
- A Sightsavers project in the urban slums of Dhaka has printed flash cards to help with awareness raising about eye health among the slum community.
- 15 nurses of different sub-specialties at the National Institute of Ophthalmology received training in counselling. This is an important part of any eye care service, when patients may be anxious or have preconceptions about their treatment, especially surgery.
- Bangladesh Computer Council, the government body responsible for promoting ICT skills, has started offering computer and ICT training to the first batch of visually impaired students. This is the result of successful lobbying by Sightsavers’ partner the Centre for Services and Information on Disability.
