Latest news from Bangladesh

The government has approved the National Women Development Policy; people in general and women’s groups in particular have welcomed the move. Sightsavers will need to review the policy in the context of disability.

Bangladesh jointly hosted the cricket World Cup for the first time.

Highlights from our projects

  • Sightsavers has successfully advocated for the Directorates of Secondary, Higher and Primary Education and the National Academy for Primary Education (NAPE) to accept the fact that they need to make education accessible for children with disabilities. NAPE has invited Sightsavers and our partner CDD to participate in an education fair in January 2012.
  • Sightsavers in Bangladesh has developed a documentary about low vision. This will be used as an educational tool, as well as awareness raising and advocacy.
  • Our Vision Bangladesh project has started, in partnership with the NGO Building Resources across Communities (BRAC). It has already achieved over 9,000 cataract surgeries.
