A new future for Nizam

Six-year-old Nizam Uddin lives in a small village in the district of Narshingdi in Bangladesh. He is pictured with his mother Alatun after having his bandages removed from his cataract surgery. He is wearing UV glasses to protect his eyes after surgery.

Nizam started to have problems with his eyesight when he was just four years old. Unable to afford medical care his family did not know what to do. Nizam’s vision had become so poor that he had to be helped around his home and village; he couldn't even play with his friends.

Alatun was very worried about Nizam "My child will become a beggar in this community if he goes blind. This is very painful for me to think of this happening to my son."

Nizam was identified with cataract through random house to house survey conducted by one of Sightsavers partners, and he was sent to the nearby hospital for treatment.

After the operation, Nizam spent the night in hospital overnight and his bandages were removed the next day.

Two days after the operation we went back to see Nizam in his home village. He was recovering very well and able to play with all his friends.

Nizam will now be able to go back to school and be able to do everyday activities and his future will be much brighter, just see from the slide show below what a difference this has made to his life.
