Our work in Kenya

At a glance

Kenya is located on the east coast of central Africa. It is one of Africa’s largest countries, with a rapidly growing population of 32.8 million people from many different ethnic groups.

Sightsavers in Kenya

Sightsavers has worked in Kenya since 1952 when we undertook the country's first survey of blindness, which revealed that three-quarters of blindness was preventable or curable.

Concentrating on rural areas and urban slums where 80% of the population live, we've introduced a sustainable system of eye care which links up treatment, prevention, inclusive education and rehabilitation services.

Trachoma is endemic in many areas of the Rift Valley and Eastern provinces. Sightsavers and partners are tackling the disease by advocating the World Health Organization's SAFE strategy which teaches prevention as well as providing treatment for the potentially blinding disease.

In February 2011 nine brave celebrities trekked 100km across one of the world’s most remote and inhospitable deserts in northern Kenya to raise money for Comic Relief and Sightsavers

Towards the end of last year, Sightsavers brought some of the people we’ve helped over to the UK.
