Our work in Malawi

At a glance

Landlocked Malawi ranks among the world's least developed countries. 90% of the population live in rural areas and the population density is one of the highest in Africa with 85 persons per square kilometre.

Sightsavers in Malawi

Sightsavers International began work in Malawi in the early 1960s and today supports programmes which cover the whole country. As in many African countries, Malawi has a shortage of health care workers so Sightsavers supports the training of eye care professionals here. Together with our partners we have also introduced inclusive education for blind and visually impaired pupils. We have also worked with WaterAid to support local committees to build latrines in order to improve sanitation, and the spread of diseases such as traucoma.

Inspiring students in Malawi

In 2008 Sightsavers was chosen to host a project visit for the winners of the G-Nation Awards. We took a group of students, including Elena Stevens, to visit our projects in Malawi. Here Elena describes her experience...

Malawi: A trip of a lifetime

When a group of Sightsavers volunteers had five unforgettable days in Malawi, Tom Shenton, a retired marketing and technical adviser in the chemical industry, kept a detailed diary.

Training workers in Malawi

Sightsavers has been supporting the training of eye care workers in Malawi, a country that is notoriously short of trained health professionals.

Long way down

We took the opportunity to talk to Sightsavers supporter Carol McGregor, who surprised her son Ewan when he was travelling through Malawi as part of his 'Long Way Down' adventure.
