Highlights and achievements

Sightsavers, with our long time partner Zimbabwe Council for the Blind (ZCfB) have been able to take eye services to those most in need. During our outreach work 900 cataract surgeries were carried out during September to December 2010. The outreach approach remains the way we’ll operate, until the situation in the country is stable enough for us to build a more sustainable referral mechanism to government hospitals.

World Sight Day was celebrated in November 2010, for the first time in many years. We used this to highlight issues surrounding avoidable blindness, and to re-engage Government.

Sightsavers and the ZCfB have been trying to revive the National Prevention of Blindness Committee.

A European Union supported programme will allow us to develop primary eye care services in three provinces in 2011.

Please note that as we are not registered medical practitioners and do not directly deliver eye care in the countries in which we work, but work with local partners, we are not able to respond to any questions regarding medical issues. Please contact your health service provider for medical advice.
