Latest news from Ghana

In September inflation dropped radically from above 14% to 9.3%. If this continues to fall we hope to see a decrease in the amount we have to spend on operational costs in Ghana.

The Ghanaian Government has recently launched a new National Development Plan outlining the national priorities for the country for the next three years. This provides a framework within which our programme in Ghana can operate.

The National Council for Persons with Disability has also launched its strategic planning process with Sightsavers’ involvement. This gives us an opportunity to influence the national priorities when it comes to disability, and helps us with our planning and networking

Highlights from our projects

  • We are hoping to build on the successful careers fair that took place in Ghana, and launch another similar but ongoing project that will be spearheaded by the Ghana Federation of the Disabled. Having already engaged disabled people’s organisations and individuals with disabilities, the next stage is to help them advocate for their rights. This will include pushing for the ratification of the UN Convention on the Right of Persons with Disabilities.
  • In two selected zones we will support the National Eye Care Programme by integrating primary eye care into primary health care. The programme will build capacity at the community level for delivering eye care services. It will also consist of other components such as low vision and child health, and the training of ophthalmic nurses.
  • Discussions have taken place with other organisations about future collaboration. These include international NGOs such as VSO, Concern and Action Aid. Working together with other organisations will help influence the development agenda in Ghana.

Please note that as we are not registered medical practitioners and do not directly deliver eye care in the countries in which we work, but work with local partners, we are not able to respond to any questions regarding medical issues. Please contact your health service provider for medical advice.
