Latest news from Ghana

Inflation continues to pose problems in Ghana. It is reported to have dipped in recent months, but petrol and fuel has gone up in price, affecting the price of goods and services.

Engaging the new ministers (whose ministries are relevant to our work) hasn’t been easy. We have met with the Minister of Women and Children Affairs to explore areas of collaboration with the government, but we are still trying to get appointments to meet the other ones.

Highlights from our projects

  • Following the formal handing over of the Eye Health Centre to the management of the Hohoe Municipal Hospital, ophthalmic services began in April. The ophthalmic unit of the centre has turned one of the wards into a make-shift theatre and has carried out operations on 68 eyes.
  • Following the training session for members of staff at the School for the Blind in Akropong, two members of staff received low vision training, meaning the centre will soon be able to deliver low vision services to children who need them.
  • The Ghana Society for the Blind computer centre continues to provide IT skills to blind and partially-sighted persons. Eight people will be finishing their training in late July.
  • As a result of advocacy work of the Disability Network in Ghana (of which Sightsavers in Ghana is a member), the National Council on Persons with Disabilities has been established and officially inaugurated by the Vice President. However, the network must continue its advocacy work to make sure that the council has the resources it needs to make it is as functional and productive as possible.

Your contribution to the health sector is just immense and I give you thumbs up for this great course. Improving the lives of the poor and needy in the society is something that everyone must applaud and contribute. Your efforts are well recognized and appreciated. Keep up the good work to the society.
