The economic situation in the country is worsening and the levels of poverty are increasing. This has depleted the earnings of the population and may affect the uptake of eye care services.

Latest highlights

  • The renovation of Boké Eye Unit was completed and equipment installed. This will allow us to deliver service to an additional population of around a million people. The Minister of Health and Public Hygiene attended the opening ceremony, and a great interest was expressed by the people, boding well for the uptake of services at the unit. The Country Director of Sightsavers Guinea received a “Certificate of satisfaction’’ from the governor of the region, as a mark of his commitment in blindness control.
  • An evaluation of the villages bordering the basins of Kolenté and Kaba along the boundary between Guinea and Sierra Leone took place. It revealed a high prevalence of river blindness in the village of Sansangni, as it shares a border with Sierra Leone. This has been put down to migration between the two countries, and insufficient Mectizan®. Ways we can address these issues include improving public awareness, and increasing the level of community distributers.
