Kulla Nalo

Kulla will be 94 this year. She has four children and 22 grandchildren! She was married to the Chief of Sumbuya, but after the war and the death of her husband she moved in with her children, in Koribondo.

Kullu is blind from glaucoma, she wears glasses to keep the wind from blowing into her eyes. “I can’t see anything through them!” she laughs.

“When I went blind I could not do anything. I needed help bathing myself and going to the toilet. My family have been great, they cook for me and do my laundry and take care of me. But in 2007 I received training from SLAB, so now I can do more for myself.”

She joined the microfinance scheme with her daughter as her sighted supporter. Her loans pay towards pineapples and palm oil, which her daughter makes the four hour drive to sell in the capitol Freetown.

“In return, I help take care of the children,” explains Kulla.
