Sad day for Sightsavers

On Monday 24 October, our Vice President Dr Dennis Williams passed away.

For over 20 years Dennis was the director of Sightsavers’ country office in Sierra Leone, including during the country’s period of civil war. For much of this time Dennis was the only Sierra Leonean ophthalmologist. Dennis was our first Vice President who has worked in a country office and who has directly restored sight!

It was on his retirement in 2008 that he was appointed Vice President of Sightsavers, in recognition of the amazing work he did over the years, often in extremely difficult circumstances.

You can click here to read an obituary written by Simon Bush, our Director of Advocacy and African Alliances. Staff from around the world have added their tributes.

You can also read a Q+A with Dennis when he was first made Vice President here.
