At a glance
Sierra Leone emerged from the decade-long civil war in early 2002. More than 17,000 foreign troops disarmed tens of thousands of rebels and militia fighters. The country now faces the challenge of reconstruction.
Sightsavers in Sierra Leone
Sightsavers has worked in Sierra Leone since the 1950s. We continued to provide eye care throughout the war and received official recognition from the Ministry of Health as the only agency able to provide ongoing services.
Now that peace has been restored to the country, our Mectizan® distribution programme, which helps to prevent river blindness, has started once again.
Together with our partners we also run projects that help people who are blind to lead independent lives.
