Latest news from The Gambia
The Global economic meltdown continued to have a negative impact on the economy of the country. The tourism industry has suffered, with hotels and hostels not filling up -resulting in job losses.
The government has continued to play a major role in ensuring the stability of Guinea Bissau. Recently, all major political parties convened in Banjul to discuss issues relating to peace and political stability. Peace and tranquillity in Guinea Bissau will promote economic growth in neighbouring countries, including The Gambia.
There have been some major changes in The Gambia. Ministers of Finance and Natural Resources and the Chief Justice have been replaced. These changes have implications for our programmes as we may experience delays in the approval of duty waiver applications, affecting the construction work at the regional eye care centre.
Highlights from our projects
- The Regional Eye Care Centre has recruited an ophthalmologist with experience in paediatric ophthalmology, to provide services in the prevention of childhood blindness. The unit has also taken responsibility of the urban optical workshop, meaning it can now fix glasses. In addition, to providing refractive error services, it now also serves as a regional optometry training centre. Ten students have enrolled in the training programme.
