- The Ministry of Education demonstrated its commitment towards ensuring that disabled children receive quality education within the wider education system, by investing human, financial and material resources to the Inclusive Education Programme. The Ministry has also rolled out inclusive education to three of six education regions in the country.
- We are moving towards a partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and the Gambia Organisation of the Visually Impaired (GOVI). If successful it will make our rehabilitation programme more sustainable.
- Community structures such as regional, municipal and community rehabilitation committees have been established, with representation from blind / disabled people’s organisations. These allow disabled people to have a voice when it comes to the community planning and development processes.
- Joint advocacy with other stakeholders propelled the Disability Bill to the point of discussion at the Attorney General’s Chambers. Having the legal advisor of the Attorney General in support of the Bill is significant for its enactment into law by the National Assembly.
- A funding partner (Luxottica/Onesight Foundation) carried out an assessment mission in the country, which led to their commitment to a three year project in support of Uncorrected Refractive Error Services in 2011. This is a significant step towards the accomplishment of our Vision 2020 objectives.
