Karen Maguire, Reception class teacher at Portrush Primary School, organised a Bring and Buy Sale recently which raised £243 for Sightsavers.

The sale was the highlight of a 6-week cross-curricular 'Helping' theme which aimed to involve the Reception Class of four-year olds in many practical activities to promote cooperation and consideration of the needs of others.

Prior to the sale the children had discussions about the 'gift' of sight and made a display of related artwork. Supported by their friends from Primaries One & Two the children spent several weeks gathering up and sorting out books and toys for the sale.

Sightsavers song

At the beginning of the sale the children performed a special song about sight and the work of the charity, which they sung to the tune of 'Bob the Builder'.  (see lyrics below).

"With Sightsavers - can we fix it?
With Sightsavers - yes we can!
We are so happy that we can see,
Our eyes are working perfectly,
But there are children around the world,
Who really need their blindness cured.
With Sightsavers - can we fix it?
With Sightsavers - yes we can!
We're bringing toys and books as well,
We're making bookmarks that we can sell,
Having a sale is so much fun,
Working together we'll get the job done!
With Sightsavers - can we fix it?
With Sightsavers - yes we can!"

The Reception Class at Portrush also made bookmarks that depicted what they would miss most if they lost their sight.  Using glitter and bright colours they produced some wonderful bookmarks that were then laminated and sold to parents during the sale.  All in all, they had a really wonderful morning and were thrilled to hear that their final total was enough to pay for 9 sight-restoring operations for children like themselves.
