Nine-year-old Lovemore was inseparable from his grandma, Iredy, for a devastating reason: he was going blind from cataracts.

Stuck to Iredy’s side, Lovemore was unable to do the things that most children take for granted. He couldn’t run, play with friends or go to school in his town in Zambia. Sadly, he’d retreated from the world around him. He was shy, unsteady on his feet and uncommunicative. He often held his hand to his face to shield his eyes from the sun as the bright rays caused him discomfort.

Iredy was terrified of how her grandson’s plight would affect their lives in the years to come. Her love and devotion had allowed him to get by so far, but it certainly wasn’t the future she had dreamed of for him. And what would happen on the sad day she wasn’t around anymore?

Lovemore had been out of school for a long time as his teachers told him only to return when he could see the blackboard again. He was unable to walk outside the boundaries of his house without his grandma’s help and couldn’t run around with the other children.

Iredy was right to be afraid. As time went on, the consequences of cataracts would have stolen Lovemore’s education and chance of a secure future.

You can help other children like Lovemore

Thankfully, Iredy heard on the radio about a Sightsavers eye screening camp. After meeting ophthalmic nurse, Postan Phiri, it was arranged for Lovemore to have cataract surgery at Lusaka Eye Hospital – a whole day’s drive away.

At the hospital Iredy sat and watched over Lovemore until it was time for his operation. When the operating theatre was ready, Lovemore silently and bravely walked in and lay down on the table.

In just 45 minutes, Dr Habiyakare restored the sight in both of Lovemore’s eyes. After surgery his transformation was truly remarkable – from a shy little boy, hiding away from the world, to a boisterous ball of energy, fully embracing his newfound freedom!

Please help us to help other children like Lovemore. In countries across Africa, 82,000 children are still living with cataracts. Your gift will help to save sight and change lives.
