Huge success for Specs Appeal auction

Sightsavers’ celebrity eBay auction, which offered bidders the opportunity to bid on hundreds of pairs of glasses and sunglasses once owned by celebrities, has come to an end after 10 days.

The auction received huge support from celebrities who sent in their specs (more than 120 pairs were generously donated to the appeal), and from supporters wanting to get their hands on a special pair of glasses while supporting our work.

More than 50 celebrities took part, including actress Meryl Streep, Beatle Ringo Starr, pop sensations and Rita Ora, Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Robbie Coltrane and style icons Kate Moss and Vivienne Westwood.

The glasses receiving the highest winning bid belonged to Ringo Starr and went for £1,849.67.

The winning bid on cyclist Chris Froome’s sunglasses was £716.25. Also fetching substantial bids were Daniel Radcliffe’s sunglasses, which went for £514.30, and fellow Harry Potter star Emma Watson’s glasses, which sold for £314.84. Liv Tyler’s donated glasses received more than £600 in bids.

The auction was incredibly successful, raising more than £10,000 to enable us to continue to carry out eye tests in some of the world’s poorest places and distribute glasses to those that need them.

Thank you to all of the celebrities who supplied us with glasses and to everyone who joined in the bidding. If you missed out on the auction or if your bid wasn’t successful, there are still ways you can support our work by donating here.
