Kids step into their idols’ shoes for Specs Appeal

08 August 2017 Five children dressed up as celebrities, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Ella Eyre, Michael Caine, Liam Gallagher and Lewis Hamilton.

Five lucky children were given the chance to become a celebrity for the day, before being snapped by acclaimed photographer Rankin as part of Sightsavers’ Specs Appeal.

The Specs Appeal fundraising auction, which runs until Sunday 13 August, gives fans a chance to bid on spectacles donated by celebrities including Liam Gallagher, Lewis Hamilton, Ella Eyre, Michael Caine and Sarah Jessica Parker.

The children, all of whom are friends or family of staff at Sightsavers, had their hair and make-up done before being kitted out in clothes to emulate their celebrity doppelganger. They then took part in a photoshoot by renowned portrait photographer Rankin.

The mini lookalikes were Charlie, aged seven, who played Liam Gallagher; Alexa, aged 10, as Sarah Jessica Parker; Jaiten, aged eight, as Ella Eyre; Jude, aged six, as Michael Caine, and Riley, aged 11, as Lewis Hamilton.

Sightsavers social media officer Taome Bamford-White, who filmed a behind-the-scenes video at the shoot, said: “The kids all had an amazing time. They loved getting into character and trying on their outfits, and were so excited to see the finished photos.”

The annual Specs Appeal campaign raises money to help Sightsavers continue its work to prevent blindness and visual impairment in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Mike Straney, Sightsavers’ Director of Major Giving, said: “The money raised from the auction could help the millions of people in developing countries who need glasses, yet a lack of ophthalmologists, a shortage of equipment or simply a lack of money often means they cannot get the help they need. Without glasses, they’re unable to see clearly, which affects their livelihood, their education and their quality of life.”

The auction continues until Sunday August 13: visit the site now to place your bid.
