Sightsavers publishes 75th anniversary research collection in global health journal

December 2025

Sightsavers has published a wide-ranging collection of research papers to mark its 75th anniversary, providing insights into tackling global health challenges and promoting equality for people with disabilities.

The research supplement features in International Health, a bi-monthly, peer-reviewed journal that focuses on global health, published by the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH).

Many of the 12 research articles in the collection focus on issues faced by marginalised groups, such as older people who are visually impaired, and how health systems can be designed to include these groups.

Elena Schmidt, Sightsavers’ director of evidence, research and innovations, said: “Sightsavers has conducted high-quality research ever since our work began in the 1950s. This research has helped to improve our development programmes and has added to the evidence base for policymakers around the world.

“I’m delighted to see the publication of this new supplement, which shows the vital role that non-governmental organisations like Sightsavers can play in advancing health and development research.”

The supplement is part of a wider collaboration between Sightsavers and RSTMH, which has previously fostered research collections focusing on eye health as well as two large neglected tropical disease initiatives: the Ascend programme and global trachoma elimination efforts.

Sightsavers supports research in eye health, neglected tropical diseases, education and social inclusion to help deliver its programmes and strategy. Visit the research centre to learn more about our latest projects and publications.
