Sightsavers to co-host event on disability and climate justice

June 2026

Sightsavers is co-hosting a panel event at London Climate Action Week in June 2026, in partnership with Newcastle University and the National Centre for Social Research.

The event, ‘Margins of the just transition: disability, labour and wellbeing in the Global South’, will explore how climate action and economic systems can better include people with disabilities and informal workers.

Taking place on Friday 26 June 2026 from 1.30pm until 3.30pm, the session will highlight the experiences of people with disabilities and outdoor workers in Africa and Asia who are already being affected by climate change.

Speakers from research organisations, civil society and disability movements will share evidence and practical solutions to ensure climate responses are fair and inclusive. There will also be an opportunity for audience discussion.

The event will bring together researchers, practitioners, activists and donors, as well as anyone interested in climate change, disability inclusion and labour rights in low and middle income countries.

Speakers include:

  • Alan Herbert Onyango, disability rights activist, journalist, TV host and co-founder of Black Albinism, a youth-led organisation promoting the rights of people with albinism in Kenya
  • Laura Alfers, international coordinator at Women in Informal Employment: Globalising and Organising (WIEGO)
  • Sarah Wang’ombe, Sightsavers’ global technical lead for gender and just transition
  • Anh Vu, research director at the National Centre for Social Research, leading its climate change research programme
  • Graham Long, senior lecturer in politics at Newcastle University, specialising in sustainability governance

The session will be chaired by Joe Buckley, Sightsavers’ technical director for inclusive economies and citizenship.
