Give a sadaqah donation today

Will you help more children like Minahil reach their potential?

Your sadaqah gift is vital in helping those who are in need.

Sightsavers works in more than 30 countries, many with large Muslim populations, helping to prevent blindness and treat those at risk of avoidable sight loss.

Alongside our partners, and with the support of people like you, we’ve helped children and families receive eye care that has helped to change the course of their lives. We also promote the rights of people with disabilities, working with local and national partners to promote inclusion. We believe everyone has the right to education, and want all children to have the opportunity to go to school.

By giving sadaqah to Sightsavers, you can help transform the lives of children like 13-year-old Minahil. Without the generosity of our supporters, Minahil wouldn’t have been able to receive a life-changing eye test that revealed she needed a pair of glasses to correct her vision.

Your sadaqah donation will help support our work wherever the need is greatest.

What is sadaqah?

In Islam, sadaqah means ‘righteousness’ and refers to a voluntary act of charity towards others without expecting anything in return and to please Allah. It can range from an act of kindness, such as helping a person or an animal, to giving a monetary gift to a charity.

Islamic New Year

The Islamic New Year, also known as the Hijri New Year, begins on the 1st of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The Hijri calendar is based on the sighting of the moon. It is expected to begin on the evening of Tuesday 16 June until sunset of Wednesday 17 June 2026.

While there are no specific celebrations prescribed for the Islamic New Year, it’s a meaningful time for reflection. Muharram reminds Muslims of the journey and sacrifice of the Prophet Muhammad and the early Muslim community. It offers Muslims an opportunity to make improvements in their lives to help bring them closer to Allah.

Giving sadaqah this New Year

Muharram is a sacred month and performing good deeds is believed to bring great rewards. Acts of worship like giving sadaqah and fulfilling zakat obligations, reading the Qur’an, fasting, and helping those in need are encouraged. By giving sadaqah at the start of the Islamic year, you can help support others while setting positive intentions for the coming months.

Minahil’s transformation shows the incredible impact your sadaqah could have. Will you give a gift this new year to help brighten a child’s future?

We hope your New Year is a time of renewed faith, generosity and compassion. Happy Islamic New Year!

How we use donations

92% of gifts to Sightsavers, including donated supplies, go directly to our charity work. The remainder helps grow awareness of Sightsavers and raises more funds for our projects.

“These glasses will help me achieve my ambitions”

Minahil sits down outside at school with a book. She rests her head on her hand and looks at the camera.

Before Minahil received her glasses, she found it very difficult to do her school work. Her poor eyesight made it a struggle to keep up with her studies, and she was overwhelmed by headaches and the strain of focusing on her work.

Everything changed when Minahil was given a pair of glasses following an eye test at school. The moment she put them on, her world was transformed.
