Together, we can end the agony of trachoma

Your gift could help Sightsavers and our partners to treat children with trachoma, and support work to eliminate the disease for good.

Trachoma is the world’s leading infectious cause of blindness, and it affects millions of people worldwide.

When a person catches trachoma, it begins as a bacterial infection similar to conjunctivitis. At this stage, it is straightforward to treat. But over time, repeated infections cause the eyelashes to turn inward and scratch against the eyeball. This can cause intense pain and ultimately lead to permanent blindness.

Nine-year-old Mohamed knew the pain of trachoma. He developed the advanced form of the disease, trichiasis, and his lashes would scrape his eyes every time he blinked. For seven years, he lived in agony, unable to attend school regularly or play football with his friends. Mohamed’s symptoms were so severe that all he could do was stay at home in a dark room, shielding his eyes from the sun.

It feels like sand moving in my eyes. It is very painful.

Thankfully, eye specialists supported by Sightsavers visited Mohamed’s village. They diagnosed his condition and helped him undergo the operation he desperately needed.

Mohamed’s mother, Moza, was immensely relieved her son was free from the pain of trachoma, finally able to go to school and enjoy his childhood. “It has been a long time,” Moza recalled, “but after he was treated I saw my child playing all the games he was supposed to be playing.”

Sadly, millions of people still face the agony of trachoma and the threat of blindness. By donating to Sightsavers, you could help us and our partners treat trachoma for more children and their families, and work to eliminate it for good.

Please give today and join our life-changing mission. You can bring us one step closer to a world free from trachoma.
