Ready to keep fit, make friends and raise money for an amazing cause? Then our Walk 100 Miles challenge this July is for you!

Whether you’re a casual stroller, a seasoned rambler or even a marathon runner in training, walk at least 100 miles in July and help raise vital funds for Sightsavers. Every mile you walk can make a life-changing difference. Together, we’re walking to raise £90,000; this is enough to give 1,000 children around the world the sight-saving operations they need. Just £90 can provide a life-changing cataract operation for a child. Your support can help children leave dependence behind.

We promise to support you every step of the way, with a welcoming community on Facebook and emails to help you reach your target. And it’s easy to take part: create your personalised fundraising page on Facebook to order your free T-shirt, share it with your friends and family, and raise as much as you can. Every pound will make an incredible difference. Thank you!

About the challenge

How does the challenge work?

The challenge is run (more likely walked) by you! The goal is to cover 100 miles in July and raise vital funds that can help provide 1,000 life-changing child cataract operations.

Once you’ve set up your Facebook fundraiser, you’re free to tackle it however you wish. Wherever and whenever you are out and about, just track your progress and update your fundraiser page with your walks.

When does the challenge take place?

The challenge starts at 12.01am on Friday 1 July and ends at 11.59pm on Sunday 31 July.

Can I start early/late?

You can join the challenge after it starts on 1 July if you want to add a little more difficulty! You can also join the team and start training before July – but your miles won’t count until July comes around.

Is 100 miles the limit?

Not at all: 100 miles is the target, but if you can go further, please do! Every mile, and every donation, helps us towards our target of raising £90,000, which could provide 1,000 children with the sight-saving cataract operation they need.

Can I do something other than walk?

Absolutely! However you decide to travel the 100 miles is wonderful: walking, running, swimming or anything in between! Just change the name of your fundraiser to reflect what you’re doing and keep it updated with your progress throughout the challenge.

Who else is doing the challenge?

We’re lucky to have a fantastic group of people taking the challenge. Once you’re signed up, you can join the group on Facebook to find other amazing people, share how you’re getting on and learn some nifty tips and tricks.

What happens if I don’t complete the challenge?

One hundred miles is a lot of ground to cover – it could take you from Bath to London or even a return trip to Brighton from the capital! Ideally everyone taking on the challenge will reach the goal, but it’s no problem if you don’t. We’re delighted you’ve chosen to take on the challenge: your efforts and fundraising will make a real difference towards our goal of raising £90,000, which could provide 1,000 children with the sight-saving cataract operation they need.

If you ever find motivation slipping or want some tips and help to take on the challenge, visit our Facebook group for support.

Tracking your progress

How do I track how far I’ve gone?

There are plenty of easy ways to track your progress. If you have a smartwatch or fitness tracker, you can use a fitness app or upload your progress to strava.com or mapmyfitness.com.

You can also use your smartphone’s fitness app to note how far you’ve got. Our tracking sheet (pdf) is also great to note your progress.

Can I take part without an activity tracker or smartphone?

Yes! Before the challenge launches you can download our progress tracker (pdf) ready for the challenge and fill it in to track how you’re getting on.

Fundraising

How do I raise money?

When you sign up to the challenge you need to create a Facebook fundraiser, you’ll then be able to order your free T-shirt! Here’s a quick guide to making the most of your fundraiser.

  • Update the description: you can update the ‘Why are you raising money?’ section to be as personal as you’d like.
  • Share your challenge as widely as possible: share your fundraiser with your friends and family through the share button on your fundraiser page (they won’t see it normally!).
  • Keep your page updated with your progress: post photos and updates from your walks through the ‘write something’ box. Don’t be afraid to share how hard it is, you’re taking on a huge challenge and there will be plenty of ups and downs – people want to be a part of your journey.

What is a Facebook Fundraiser?

Facebook fundraisers are a part of Facebook, offering an easy way to support and share charitable causes without leaving the site. They are free to set up, and all donations to Facebook fundraisers are free from fees, meaning proceeds go directly to the charity you are supporting.

Can I raise money offline with a sponsorship card?

Absolutely! If you’d like to collect donations offline, download and fill out the sponsorship form (pdf), which contains everything you need to know.

Unfortunately, we can’t accept cash donations through the post. If you have cash donations, the easiest way to send them to us is to pay them into your bank account and transfer the money to Sightsavers online via credit or debit card.

Alternatively, you can send cheques, Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) vouchers and postal orders, which should be signed, dated and made payable to Sightsavers. Include your name, address and details of your event, plus any sponsorship forms so we can collect Gift Aid payments.

Send to: Sightsavers, Bumpers Way, Bumpers Farm, Chippenham SN14 6NG or FREEPOST SIGHTSAVERS.

Hopefully these answers will have you well on your way to striding through the Walk 100 miles in July challenge!

If you have any further questions, please explore the Facebook group once you’re signed up. You can also send any questions to [email protected].
